Syria rebels capture 150 troops in Aleppo, Idlib: NGO

Syrian rebels on Friday captured 150 regime troops and militia members in the northern city of Aleppo and the northwestern province of Idlib, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

It reported rebels as saying they had captured 100 regime soldiers and militia members in Aleppo and another 50 in Idlib, citing videos distributed by Syrian activists.

The video of dozens of men in civilian clothing seated in a courtyard in Aleppo was filmed by a man describing himself as a member of the rebel Free Syrian Army.

The captured men tell the camera that they are in the Syrian army and the "shabiha" pro-regime militia.

"I am Colonel Mohammed Rashid Mohammed al-Mhmeid... I was arrested at the entrance of Aleppo," one says.

"I am Captain Fuad al-Hosh, commander of the Aleppo police in Shaar district. I was captured when I left my post," says another.

One man identifies himself as a member of the shabiha, saying he was captured in Hanano in Aleppo and had "killed a demonstrator."

Both rebels and troops have been massing in Aleppo for a major battle, but fighting has already taken place, including in the southern district of Salaheddin.

The Observatory said the second video shows the aftermath of fighting in the town of Maaret al-Numan in Idlib.

"After clashes that lasted 12 hours, rebels destroyed a military security post and captured 50 regime troops, including 14 officers," Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP by phone.

Abdul Rahman said the fighters seized a large amount of weapons and ammunition from the military post near a checkpoint.

In the video posted on YouTube, rebels in civilian clothing are seen rummaging through what appears to be an old building used as government offices.

The person recording the footage walks through an arched hallway into an adjacent room, where a body with a severed arm lies on the floor.

One man tells the others: "Pee on him."

"No, he's already dead. Show some respect," another retorts.

Outside, the streets are littered with debris and teenage boys and men walk freely, toting Kalashnikov assault rifles.

"This is the largest street in Maaret al-Numan, which was controlled by the regime. It is now in the hands of the local rebels." the cameraman is heard to say.

By calling professionals trained to get of these bugs, you greatly lower the risk of anyone in your family becoming sick. Roaches leave behind filth that can allow the contraction of serious diseases.

Rodents can cause damage in your home in several ways. These creatures chew up important documents and tear up expensive wallpaper. However, the worst part of mice or rats moving into your home is the collection of diseases they bring as well. The droppings and urine left behind on your counters or floors is a serious health risk. Make sure you hire someone with experience to rid your house of rodents.

Finding the company you can count for ridding your house of pests is important. Learn from other families you know about the companies they may have hired in the past. Check out the internet and read customer testimonials. Taking the time to research the backgrounds of companies allows you to make better choices about them. Look at the Better Business Bureau listings for comments made about companies you may be researching.

Some services for helping you to stay free of pests can be ongoing at your home. You might consider the aerial misting system for outdoor use in the prevention of mosquitoes. Maybe you need constant protection from termites. Signing up for future scheduled treatments is a wise idea as well. These are services you should inquire about at the company you are considering. Some companies do not provide these types of more specialized services.

Choosing the best Dallas pest control services also means you are choosing to live in a cleaner and healthier home environment. This is a choice important to families with children. Take the time to find out how your home can always be free of pests.

Stay-at-home Londoners expected to temper tourism boost

LONDON (Reuters) - Londoners scared off by dire warnings of transport chaos will likely cancel out any revenue boost from increased foreign visitors to the city's West End during the Olympic Games, the landlord of large parts of the tourist district said.

Shaftesbury, which owns 330 shops and 217 restaurants, bars and cafes across areas like Chinatown, Covent Garden and Soho, in a neighbourhood also home to London's "theatreland", said warnings of disruption to road and tube services would convince many locals to stay at home.

"For weeks we've had stories of where to avoid, which potentially puts up a barrier in people's minds that parts of London are no-go zones," chief executive Brian Bickell told Reuters on Thursday. "People won't go to the theatre if they are worried about getting back home afterwards."

As part of preparations for the Games, which begin on Friday, organisers have blocked off road lanes for the exclusive use of athletes and officials and set traffic lights to stay red for longer, which has already caused traffic nightmares.

Dubbed "Zil" lanes after Soviet roads reserved for black limousines carrying senior Communist party members, the designated lanes were introduced after athletes became stranded in traffic jams at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Organisers have also warned of long queues at tube stations during busy periods, putting the city's creaking transport network under further strain.

Bickell said the Games would help raise the already-high profile of London whatever the short-term effects, and that was a good thing.

"The next two weeks will be a very unusual time for the West End. Longer term it's a fantastic opportunity for London and the best travel advert possible."

Telepresent kissing machine sadder than actual long-distance ...

To cope with long-distance relationships, partners often train memory like a muscle, flexing in times of desire a truly sensational remembrance of compassion, in order to rejoin lost love with the present. But if you would rather let this extraordinary part of the brain atrophy in lieu of a cheap technological surrogate, you end up kissing a lumpy, bloated device of mechanical grotesquerie called a Kissenger.

The lips contain pressure sensors and actuators. When you kiss them, the shape changes you create are transmitted in real time over the net to a receiving Kissenger. There, the actuators reproduce the mirror image of the pressure patterns you created? magically transmitting your smacker to your partner.

But is it really your partner? As more people have the option become globally itinerant and remotely in love, solutions to the pain distance causes can be devastating to the relationship. I'm not sure what devastates the human heart more?losing love, or making love to the featureless head of a robotic Harry Kissinger.

Like most commentators, US broadcaster CNN was unimpressed. The researchers' idea of recording celebrity tongue motions for all to experience was not particularly well received.

"The main aim is to improve long-distance relationships, says [Hooman Samani of Singapore-based Lovotics, which developed the device.] We've taken several steps to minimise the creepiness."

Apparently, this means dressing up the egg like a pig. If the distance must carry on, perhaps you can do what Kevin Warwick did?implant a chip and sidestep the horror of the uncanny valley for pure telekinetic sensation.

LIFE ElderCare receives Sobrato Family Foundation Fundraising ...

LIFE ElderCare, a nonprofit organization serving frail, homebound seniors in Fremont, Newark and Union City, was recently awarded a Challenge Grant from the Sobrato Family Foundation. The grant will be used to support general operations and community programming for the organization?s Meals On Wheels program. This is the third Challenge Grant the organization has received from the Foundation.

The initial grant amount of $10,000 was received this month. If LIFE ElderCare successfully matches this amount with new or increased cash donations by June 30, 2013, the Foundation will increase the award by another $10,500 resulting in an overall $30,500 increase in funding.

?During our last fiscal year, we served over 100,000 meals to seniors with the help of 236 community volunteers,? said Liz Jardin, Interim Executive Director at LIFE ElderCare. ?Donations from individuals and businesses are needed to provide meals to those who are most at risk of suffering from malnutrition.?

Since 1975, LIFE ElderCare has been providing direct services to homebound seniors living in Fremont, Newark and Union City, California. Their four programs, Meals on Wheels, Friendly Visitors, VIP Rides and Falls Prevention promote healthy aging and enable independent living for as long as safely possible. Donations can be made online or by calling Liz Jardin at 510-574-2073.

Located in California?s Silicon Valley, the Sobrato Family Foundation?s investments are targeted toward strong community-based organizations that promote self-reliance and economic independence, and positively contribute to the quality of life for economically, physically and/or emotionally challenged individuals in Santa Clara, San Mateo and Southern Alameda Counties.

Protein Refolds To Perform Second Job

60-Second Science60-Second Science | More Science

The transcription factor RfaH unfolds and then refolds into a new conformation to become a translation factor. Ian Chant reports.

More 60-Second Science

Secret identities aren?t just for superheroes anymore. Researchers have found that a protein present in everything from amoebas to people is living a double life. Once it binds to DNA, the protein, called RfaH, rips apart?and then refolds into a different shape, to do a different job.

RfaH is a transcription protein?attached to or freed from a stretch of DNA, it determines if a gene is expressed or not. But once the protein has carried out its task, its helical structure unravels. Within seconds, it refolds into a barrel structure, which has a new role, this time in translation, where it helps the cell produce amino acids for new proteins. The study is in the journal Cell. [Bj?rn M. Burmann et al, An ? Helix to ? Barrel Domain Switch Transforms the Transcription Factor RfaH into a Translation Factor]

The next step is to find out if the barrel can refold into the helix. After that, researchers want to see if proteins similar to RfaH?which are present in all life on Earth?are capable of comparable molecular contortion. Which would mean a lot more bang for our protein buck.

?Ian Chant

Ohio: why it could be decisive for Obama and Romney

Ohio is the reigning bellwether in presidential politics, having voted for the winner every time since 1964. And in many ways, the Buckeye State is a microcosm of the country.

By Linda Feldmann,?Staff writer / July 23, 2012

Republican presidential candidate, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney gestures during a campaign stop at K's Hamburger Shop on Sunday, June 17, in Troy, Ohio.

Ask Steve Ingersol, a 30-something waiter at Applebee?s near Akron, Ohio, how he?s going to vote in November, and he shrugs.

' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

?No matter who the president is, it?s just someone to blame stuff on,? says Mr. Ingersol, a registered Republican who voted for Barack Obama in 2008 because he thought it would be ?cool? to have a black president. This time, he says, his vote is a coin toss.

Ingersol doesn?t know it, but he?s a hot commodity in Ohio, part of a key demographic ? the white working class ? in what could be the decisive state of the 2012 race. If the upper Midwest, from Iowa to Pennsylvania, is the premier battleground region of the country, then Ohio is ground zero. While Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania lean Democratic, Ohio and Iowa are tossups. And with 18 electoral votes (to Iowa?s six), Ohio has more power to swing the outcome.

Chances are, between now and Nov. 6, Ingersol will hear plenty more about his choices. The TV airwaves are already crackling with political ads. The local Portage County Tea Party is armed with voter lists for door-to-door canvassing and phone calls. The unions, too, are revving up. And both the Obama and Romney teams are on track to set up more campaign offices around Ohio than did any previous nominees.

For Mr. Obama, winning Ohio isn?t essential to reaching 270 electoral votes. But it is for Mitt Romney. No Republican has ever been elected president without carrying Ohio.

Last week alone, Obama, Mr. Romney, and Vice President Joe Biden all made campaign appearances in Ohio. First lady Michelle Obama heads to Columbus and Dayton on Tuesday.

And it comes as no surprise that three of Romney?s top campaign surrogates and potential running mates are from the upper Midwest ? starting with Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, a former George W. Bush budget director. The others are Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin and former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty.

?[Senator Portman] is worth three to five points in Ohio,? says Ohio GOP chairman Bob Bennett, who has been talking up his state?s junior senator with Romney. ?Independents like Portman. And Democrats don?t get mad at him.?

Where every vote matters

Rare is the running mate who can swing a state, but in a battleground as tight as Ohio, every vote matters. Four years ago, Obama won the state by just 4.6 percentage points, even as he was winning Wisconsin by 14 points and Michigan by 16. This year, his margins are down everywhere.

And with most voters already in one or the other camp, ?Ohio will be decided by 5 to 8 percent of its electorate,? says Rex Elsass, one of the top GOP admen in the United States, based near Columbus, Ohio.

Which brings us back to Ingersol, the Applebee?s waiter. In some ways, he?s the quintessential white working-class voter ? a tough demographic for Obama in 2008 and even more so now. Ingersol is a single dad with no health insurance. But he?s so busy with work and family that the new health-care law is barely on his radar. And it may not be enough to bring him back to Obama.

For big-budget Penn St, fine not as big as seems

(AP) ? The $60 million fine levied on Penn State by the NCAA doesn't look so big next to the scale of the athletic department's finances.

Penn State plans to pay the fine, part of sanctions announced Monday over the child sexual abuse scandal, in five annual installments of $12 million.

The Penn State athletic department had more than $116 million in revenue to more than $84 million in expenses for the 2010-11 school year, according to data reported by the school to the U.S. Department of Education. The expenses don't include debt service or capital expenditures.

Penn State won't be able to save money by making cuts in other sports. The NCAA specifically prohibited that as part of the punishment.

Instead of simply cutting costs, the athletic department can make up for any shortfalls in another way: raising money.

Major college athletic departments receive significant financial support from booster clubs. The Nittany Lion Club took in more than $82 million for the 2011 fiscal year, according to its annual report. That includes $34 million in special gifts for facilities. Its annual fund brought in $17 million, and donations for suites and club seats at Beaver Stadium totaled $12 million.

There were 50 contributors who gave at least $20,000 each.

Bob Harrison, Class of 1962, has donated more than $250,000 to Penn State in his life. Frustrated that the NCAA based its sanctions on what he considers a deeply flawed Freeh report, Harrison's support for the school and the athletic department has not wavered. And he believes he's not the only booster who feels that way.

"I would say a high percentage supporting the athletic program will continue to," said Harrison, who worked for Goldman Sachs for 28 years.

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett demanded assurances from the university that taxpayer money would not be used. Penn State said it would cover it with its athletics reserve fund and capital maintenance budget and, if necessary, borrow money.

The reduction in football scholarships handed down by the NCAA will save the athletic program some. The accompanying bowl ban could also reduce costs, because schools often lose money on lower-level bowls.

The NCAA said the $60 million represented the average annual gross revenue of the football program. The money will go toward outside programs devoted to preventing child sexual abuse or assisting victims.

The Big Ten also announced that Penn State would not be allowed to share in the conference's bowl revenue during the postseason ban, an estimated loss of about $13 million.

At Penn State, the men's basketball team had profits of nearly $5 million in 2010-11, according to the Department of Education report. Teams other than football and men's basketball had about $23 million in expenses, and the athletic department spent another $36.5 million on expenses not allocated to a particular sport. Football cost $19.5 million.

Of course, football revenue could lag if the team struggles badly on the field as a result of the sanctions, and ticket sales decrease.

The university said earlier this month that its fundraising was strong over the past year despite the scandal. Penn State received more than $208 million in donations for the fiscal year that just ended, the second-highest total in school history.

A Look at Facts and Myths of Health and Fitness

Ignoring anyone who talks at the gym isn?t always a bad idea. There are some great tips to be had from talkers at the gym but you can also inadvertently gain false or even harmful information from those who don?t really know what they are talking about. It is much like many other situations where people are unaware they don?t know what they are talking about. That happens all the time in life. It?s important for this reason that you ensure you are getting accurate information from only well known credible sources. These tips can help you get the best information.

Information on back pain products and yoga is abundant online. The marketing states that yoga can help with your back pain. This is only true for some cases, making this statement misleading and dangerous. Yoga can certainly help with back pain due to muscle issues. You can stretch and strengthen the muscles in your back by doing yoga. Your back pain will go away as you do that. Back pain due to bone issues, like a problem with a spinal disc, won?t be relieved by yoga. You can actually make the problem worse by doing yoga in this kind of situation.

Basically, for best benefit go by the old saying no pain no gain. If you are living by this motto you are making a mistake. There are many big differences between gaining aerobic benefit and working with serious pain. What we are discussing here is not normal muscle soreness that you may feel after a workout involving unused muscle groups, but instead the pain in your body that does not stop quickly, stop immediately. You will only cause yourself more complications by continuing an exercise that is causing you pain.

Engaging in a quality fitness routine will help improve your physical and mental performance, as well. Greater strength and stamina will help improve your physical performance. Exercise also gives you a greater degree of clarity which obviously helps with mental performance. Also, it is true that people who have regular exercise naturally tend to carry those positive habits into other areas of their life such as diet and nutrition.

Health and fitness advice is never too far away, some of it is truth and some if it is something else. There is information out there to give support to something you have heard, if you cannot find any support for it then you should not believe it.

AP Source: Suspect bought ticket to movie

(AP) ? A U.S. official says the suspect in Friday's shootings inside a Colorado movie theater bought a ticket to the midnight showing of the latest Batman movie and went into the theater as part of the crowd.

A federal law enforcement official said suspect James Holmes is believed to have propped open an exit door in the theater as the movie was playing, donned protective ballistic gear and opened fire. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing investigation.

Police in Aurora, Colo., said Holmes fired at least 71 shots and killed at least 12 people. Police said he had an AR-15 assault rifle, a shotgun, and two .40-caliber Glock handguns. Holmes is also believed to have hurled a gas canister into the theater before opening fire.

James Holmes Confirmed as Client on Adult Dating Site

An X-rated dating site has confirmed that suspected Colorado shooter James Holmes was, indeed, a client, having made a profile for the service on July 5 and last logging in some time this week.

Adult Friend Finder tells TMZ that it traced the profile in question back to Aurora, Colorado - the town in which Holmes is accused of killing 12 people who were attending a showing of The Dark Knight Rises - and that the address and date of birth entered match those of the alleged murderer.

James Holmes Profile

The profile lists basic information, such as Holmes labeling himself a "light/social drinker," while also including his penis size ("short/average") and, most eerie of all, a message that reads:

Will you visit me in prison?

Police will likely investigate the profile just to learn as much as possible about the 24-year old in custody.

Holmes reportedly did not put up a fight when arrested, but he was sporting red hair at the time and told authorities "I'm The Joker" upon being apprehended.

Maehl's time now: Paradise High grad set for second NFL training camp

PARADISE ? With NFL training camps set to open up like clockwork around the league next week, the vacation for Paradise High School product and Houston Texans wide receiver Jeff Maehl is closing fast.

Maehl's day-to-day job is less of a task and more of a dream that he admittedly didn't see coming when he was a little boy growing up in Paradise, he said.

Maehl, a 2007 Paradise High graduate and former record-setting receiver at the University of Oregon, relishes the opportunity to get back to playing football professionally against world-class athletes with the chance to make the 53-man active roster out of training camp.

For those who don't remember, Maehl, 23, failed to make the cut and instead was designated to the Texans' practice squad a year ago. The 6-foot, 178-pound Maehl ended up getting promoted to the active roster prior to Houston's home game against Carolina in week 15 of the regular season.

His goal this season is to make the team out of training camp, which gets underway a week from Friday, Maehl said.

"First of all is to make the 53," he said. "It's a dream come true for me. When I was a little kid, all I wanted to do was play a college sport and then to be able to take it to the next level and play professionally is a dream come true. I find myself sometimes at practice looking over and seeing Andre Johnson next to me and thinking how surreal it is."

Maehl, who stopped by Paradise's annual Bobcat youth football camp on Tuesday to sign

autographs and visit old friends and family, thinks his chances of being named to the opening-day roster Sept. 9 when the Texans host Miami are better than last year. One of the reasons for Maehl's optimism stems from the fact that with the exception of veterans Johnson and Kevin Walter, the Texans' receiving corps this year is essentially on the same level.

Johnson and Walter are the only Houston receivers to have caught an NFL pass.

"A lot of inexperience and just a lot of competition, and that's something we're all looking forward to," Maehl said. "The coaches are looking forward to us battling. It's pretty much wide open for whoever steps up and takes it."

Maehl says since he and Lestar Jean, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound receiver out of Florida Atlantic are entering their second training camp in Houston, it's imperative that the pair act as veterans among the younger group that includes Maehl, Jean, two drafted rookies in DeVier Posey and Keshawn Martin and a trio of undrafted free agents.

"They don't expect guys like me and Lestar to make mental mistakes that we made as rookies," Maehl said. "So just continuing to stay consistent, and then it all comes down to making plays and showing your worth out there."

Paradise varsity coach Rick Prinz, who barked at and directed Maehl for three seasons up on the Ridge, says he's extremely confident his former star pupil will come to play beginning next week.

"He had a great foundation at Oregon and becoming their top receiver of all-time," Prinz said. "I think it just takes reps, picking up the speed of the game, reacting and not having to think. With his work ethic, athletic ability and intelligence, he'll be there eventually."

And Prinz says he'll be in his corner every step of the way.

"For me personally, I went from a coach to now one of his biggest fans. I'm enjoying it and hoping the best for him," he said. "I know he's working hard, and I'm very confident that he's going to be successful and achieve all his goals."

The dream and day-to-day job of an NFL receiver resumes next week.

Maehl says the best thing about this two-year stint as a professional wide receiver has been forming a bond with guys he thought he'd never meet as a boy.

"Just being able to meet guys I grew up idolizing," Maehl said. "The Andre Johnsons, the Brian Cushings ? obviously I played against him ? but guys that are such big names in the NFL and you find out they're so down to Earth and humble. It's something not everyone on the outside knows, and it's been a dream come true."

Seattle Residential Real Estate Market - Seattle Real Estate Investing

The Seattle residential real estate market has seen some incredible ups and downs over the last few years. But there is good news on the horizon! A recent WSJ report indicates that in a third (33%) of the zip codes in Seattle, home values were up. While this isn?t the recovery we?d all like to see of course, it?s a marked improvement over last year at this time when housing was up only in 3% of Seattle zip codes. This does mean there is a recovery ongoing and it?s now become the perfect time to buy!

Neighborhoods with high-quality schools, low crime rates and attractive houses have seen an especially marked rise in prices. Experts are now beginning to see demand return to pre-2007 levels. Six years after the housing market began its slide down there were points when no one could see the bottom. However, this last spring saw home prices go up by ten percent in April and experts believe that recovery will continue as prices will be up over 13% by the end of the year. Real estate sales overall were up eight percent. The best leading indicator of the recovery in the Seattle residential market was the fall in the bloated inventory of homes on the market. Nationally, it?s fallen to a six month supply over the previous nine months of what we were seeing before this latest recovery.

Click here to apply for our discounted buyers list now

In fact, in the Seattle residential real estate market, spare home inventory has fallen by nearly 34%, the fourth largest in the country. Home prices are stabilizing in the Seattle real estate market as well which bodes well for future investment in properties around the Seattle area.

The inventory of homes for sale is an early indicator for home prices in national real estate markets and when inventory contracts to the point where homebuyers aren?t finding enough options, prices rise which is what we are observing in the Seattle real estate market. The median age of the inventory is 46 years, with a year over drop of 34.28%.

Another trend of the Seattle market currently is that a great deal of buyers are investing in multiple properties in the Seattle Real Estate Market. The trend seems to be aggressive home buying which has led to the contraction in available inventory. Because of this aggressive home-buying, 1,769 homes were sold with the median price of a single-family home at $360,000 ? up nine percent over March. This is the second month of gains in a row for the Seattle real estate market.

With these positive trends, this is the best time for investors to get in on an amazing market right before the recovery really gets into gear! Don?t wait and kick yourself a few years down the road. Get in on the ground floor now!

Tigers?rip Wilson, handle?Angels

By LARRY LAGE

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:57 p.m. ET July 18, 2012

DETROIT (AP) - Doug Fister is starting to pitch the way he did last season - and that's great news for the Detroit Tigers.

Fister gave up just two hits over eight innings and Prince Fielder capped a four-run second inning with a two-run single to help Detroit beat the Los Angeles Angels 7-2 Wednesday night.

"It was another step in the right direction," the right-hander said.

Fister (4-6) allowed one run on Albert Pujols' homer, struck out a season-high 10 and walked two for his third straight win.

He has had two stints on the disabled list this season with a strained left side, stunting his chances to follow up on what he did last year to help the Tigers win their division for the first time since 1987. Fister was 8-1 with a 1.79 ERA for Detroit after it acquired him from Seattle in a six-player trade nearly a year ago.

"Any time you take a hit or an injury, it's difficult to deal with," he said. "But at the same time, it's what makes you stronger, how you can mentally climb through something."

The Angels, meanwhile, hope starter C.J. Wilson can regain the form he had earlier this season.

Wilson (9-6) gave up a season-high seven runs on eight hits and five walks while striking out seven over six innings, extending his winless streak to four starts.

"I think it was just an anomaly," he insisted. "They hit a lot of grounders in the right spots, and a couple balls that landed just in front of our outfielders. Over the course of a season, those things usually even out."

The rough night might've given Wilson flashbacks. In his last start at Detroit - for the Texas Rangers - he gave up six runs in six innings of a 7-5 loss in Game 5 of the AL championship series.

"It looked like he couldn't get a feel for the baseball," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "He got behind, and that led to some walks and some hits. He's a pitcher that relies a lot on movement, and sometimes that means he will get behind hitters."

Pujols hit a two-out solo homer, his 17th, in the first inning to give Los Angeles its only lead - which didn't last long. Delmon Young made it 1-all in the home half and extended his hitting streak to 10 games.

The Tigers provided Fister with more than enough run support in the second inning.

Brennan Boesch led off with a double, Gerald Laird drew a four-pitch walk and Ryan Raburn turned boos into cheers with an RBI single. Miguel Cabrera had with an RBI groundout and Fielder followed with a sharply hit single to left field that made it 5-1. Fielder is hitting .643 with runners in scoring position this month.

Boesch hit another double, driving in two runs, in the fifth to help the Tigers win for the ninth time in 11 games.

"We're starting to click a little bit," he said.

Joaquin Benoit replaced Fister in the ninth inning and gave up a one-out triple to hot-hitting rookie Mike Trout, who scored on Torii Hunter's groundout for the Angels' second run.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland was going to give Fister a shot at pitching a complete game, but changed course when he felt stiff.

"It was a no-brainer," Leyland said.

Fister agreed.

"We just didn't want to take any chances," he said. "It was a good call."

NOTES: Pujols limped off the field after getting tagged out in the fourth inning and seemed to be favoring his left leg, but stayed in the game. "He's fouled a couple balls off of (his left foot), and he hit a base wrong in New York, so it bothers him from time to time," Scioscia said. "He just took a bad stride going down to second, and it bothered him a little. But our trainers have been checking him out and it isn't anything we are concerned about. Guys play nicked up all the time. He's fine." ... The Tigers plan to start Jacob Turner on Sunday against the AL Central-leading Chicago White Sox after he gave up seven runs in just two innings in a 13-0 loss to the Angels on Tuesday night. ... The Angels are hopeful that Vernon Wells and Chris Iannetta can take another step in their comebacks from the disabled list with rehab assignments this weekend. ... The Angels were encouraged by how Angels RHP Dan Haren (lower back stiffness) threw in a bullpen session Wednesday.

Glyphosate-resistant 'superweeds' may be less susceptible to diseases

ScienceDaily (July 17, 2012) ? Scientists searching for clues to understand how superweeds obtain resistance to the popular herbicide glyphosate may have been missing a critical piece of information, a Purdue University study shows.

Glyphosate, the active ingredient in the weed killer sold under the name RoundUp, is the most widely used herbicide in the United States, but some plants have grown resistant to it. This has caused farmers to turn to additional herbicides. While the mechanisms that have led to resistance are not fully known, Bill Johnson, a professor of weed science; Steve Hallett, an associate professor of weed science; and Jessica Schafer, a graduate student in botany and plant pathology, believe that soil microbes may play a role.

Most laboratory tests done to understand glyphosate resistance are done in sterile soil, void of those microbes. Schafer said Purdue's findings, published online early in the journal Weed Science, show that those microbes may play a significant role in how glyphosate affects plants.

"The soil you're growing the plants in is important to the results," Schafer said. "If we're growing in a sterile media, we could get some false positive results because the plants are more tolerant to glyphosate in those conditions."

Hallett and Schafer grew giant ragweed, horseweed and common lambsquarter in both sterile soil and field soil and subjected them to glyphosate. In each soil, strains of weeds both susceptible and resistant to glyphosate were tested.

Both versions of giant ragweed were damaged more from the glyphosate in field soil. The susceptible version of common lambsquarter was also more heavily damaged in field soil. Horseweed fared the same no matter which soil or strain -- susceptible or resistant.

The results show that microbes can play an important role in the activity of glyphosate, presumably by invading the glyphosate-weakened plants. The results also suggest that glyphosate-resistant weeds may be more resistant to disease pressure as well.

"Soil microbes can be minor to major contributors to how glyphosate is able to affect plants," Hallett said. "We may be selecting not only for glyphosate resistance, but inadvertently selecting for weeds that have disease resistance as well."

A weed's ability to withstand glyphosate was based on dry shoot and root weight after testing. The sterile soil used in the study came from field soil exposed to gamma radiation to kill microbes and bacteria. The irradiated soil was tested to ensure that its nutrients were not diminished.

Hallett, Johnson and Schafer said further studies would look at how fungi in the soil affect root development, both with and without glyphosate.

"Dirt is a living organism," Johnson said. "It's important to know how all the pieces interact."

The research was conducted with internal funding from Purdue's Department of Botany and Plant Pathology.
