    99% Finding Nemo 3D

    All Critics (222) | Top Critics (45) | Fresh (232) | Rotten (2) | DVD (48)

A genuinely funny and touching film that, in less than a decade, has established itself as a timeless classic.

It makes even more compelling what is still my all-time favorite Pixar film.

Think of this re-release as an encore, a handy touchstone for you and your kids. "Finding Nemo" was and remains the gold standard against which all other modern animated films are measured, a classic from the day it premiered.

In this seamless blending of technical brilliance and storytelling verve, the Pixar team has made something as marvelously soulful and innately, fluidly American as jazz.

Nemo, with its ravishing underwater fantasia, manages to trump the design glamour of earlier Pixar films.

Gill is Platoon's Sgt. Elias if he'd survived Sgt. Barnes' treachery and returned to civilian life weary and hard-bitten from his experiences. And also a fish.

Finding Nemo 3D is a quality post-conversion experience that successfully enhances the 2003 film's original standout visuals.

The 3D gives the images a little more depth but they already had heft and weight. The 3D is a money-making gimmick, nothing more.

A great blend of storytelling and technology.

It's downright curmudgeonly to remain focused on the negatives when the rest of the picture is saturated with invention and wit.

It's bright, it's beautiful and it hasn't aged a day. So why, then, do we need to see it in 3-D?

A rare example of a movie that not only survives its 3-D conversion but benefits from it

It was as funny as I remember and brilliant because it is subtle. It just knocks it out of the park. I love everything about this movie, one of my favorite Pixar movies of all time, 5/5 Schmoes. The new sound/3D adds to the greatness that is Nemo.

If you're fishing for fun in an ocean of movie mediocrity, grab the kids or the grandkids, fork out a few extra bucks and see this one in three-dimensions.

It's a great movie, so much fun, an acheivement that should be enjoyed by children of all ages and worth seeing it in 3D.

Sea-worthy w/enhanced visual lure and rich, humorous characters set in a double narrative; this 3D revisit allows us to fall overboard all over again.

If ever there was a film that wasn't broke, this is it. So naturally they converted it into 3D for a special re-release this weekend. (Stupid irony.)

I believe my sensitivity to certain creative choices of the picture has dulled some, while age has opened my eyes to its complex relationships and tireless sense of exploration.

When the blunt head of Bruce the shark slams into the screen like a hammer, everyone -- adults included -- gasps

At its best, the added dimension is merely harmless, making the movie blurry enough that you need special glasses to make it sharp again.

Mars Curiosity rover discovers ancient streambed on planet's surface (+video)

This water flow was likely quite vigorous, perhaps akin to the flows produced by flash floods in desert areas here on Earth, researchers announced.

    By Mike Wall,?SPACE.com / September 27, 2012

NASA's Curiosity rover found evidence for an ancient, flowing stream on Mars at a few sites, including the rock outcrop pictured here, which the science team has named 'Hottah' after Hottah Lake in Canada's Northwest Territories. This image mosaic was taken by Curiosity's 100-millimeter Mastcam telephoto lens on its 39th Martian day, or sol, of the mission.

NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has discovered what appears to be an ancient streambed, suggesting that water once flowed in large volumes ? perhaps hip-deep in places ? across the Martian surface.

Photos from the Curiosity rover?have revealed several different rocky outcrops that contain stones cemented into a layer of conglomerate rock. Some of these stones are rounded and large, indicating that they were transported relatively long distances across the Red Planet surface by water.

This water flow was likely quite vigorous, perhaps akin to the flows produced by flash floods in desert areas here on Earth, researchers announced today (Sept. 27).

"From the size of gravels it carried, we can interpret the water was moving about 3 feet per second, with a depth somewhere between ankle and hip deep," Curiosity co-investigator William Dietrich, of the University of California, Berkeley, said in a statement. [The Search for Water on Mars (Photos)]

"Plenty of papers have been written about channels on Mars with many different hypotheses about the flows in them," Dietrich added. "This is the first time we're actually seeing water-transported gravel on Mars. This is a transition from speculation about the size of streambed material to direct observation of it."

The findings came after researchers studied photographs of three different outcrops inside Gale Crater, where Curiosity touched down on Aug. 5.

The first outcrop, known as Goulburn, lies a few feet from the rover's landing site. Curiosity spotted the other two ? called Link and Hottah ? as it's been rambling toward an area called Glenelg, its first major science target.

Photos of Link really got the team thinking of long-ago stream flows, Curiosity chief scientist John Grotzinger, of Caltech in Pasadena, told reporters today. And images of Hottah, which juts from the Red Planet surface at an odd angle, pretty much sealed the deal.

"Hottah looks like someone jack-hammered up a slab of city sidewalk, but it's really a tilted block of an ancient streambed," Grotzinger said in a statement.

On Earth, tilted outcrops are usually the result of tectonic activity. But Hottah could have been deformed by a nearby impact or other process, Grotzinger said.

The?water on Mars?likely flowed several billion years ago, researchers said, though an exact timeframe will be tough to determine. But the extent of the system that produced the outcrops ? and the surrounding alluvial fan and channels ? suggests that it wasn't produced in a single shot.

Rather, water was likely flowing over a relatively long chunk of time, scientists said.

"I'm comfortable to argue that it's certainly beyond the thousand-year timescale, but we're still gathering data to go further with that," Dietrich told reporters today.?

The team has not yet analyzed Link or Hottah with Curiosity's 10 different science instruments; rather, the researchers' conclusions are based on images of?Mars?snapped by the rover's Mast Camera. But those pictures capture plenty of evidence, Grotzinger said.

"In some cases, when you do geology, a picture's worth a thousand words," he said.

The $2.5 billion?Mars rover Curiosity?is about 50 days into a roughly two-year mission to determine if the Gale Crater area has ever been capable of supporting microbial life.

Despite the outcrop discoveries, the six-wheeled robot's ultimate destination remains the base of Mount Sharp, a 3.4-mile-high (5.5 kilometers) mountain that rises from Gale's Center. The mysterious mountain's foothills show signs of long-ago exposure to liquid water.

"A long-flowing stream can be a habitable environment," Grotzinger said. "It is not our top choice as an environment for preservation of organics, though. We're still going to Mount Sharp, but this is insurance that we have already found our first potentially habitable environment."

NFL refs approve deal, ready for Sunday games

The deal must be ratified by 51 percent of the union's 121 members. (AP Photo/Nomaan Merchant)

(AP) ? NFL officials ended their labor dispute with the league by approving a new eight-year contract with a 112-5 vote Saturday, then hustled off to the airport to get to work.

Next stop, stadiums around the country.

    And, the officials hope, anonymity.

"The last Super Bowl that I worked, when we got in the locker room, I said, 'You know, the best thing about this game, nobody will remember who refereed this game,'" said Scott Green, president of the referees' association. "That's how we like to work."

The vote ended a labor spat that created three weeks of increasingly chaotic games run by replacement officials who drew criticism of everyone from the average fan to President Barack Obama.

"It was pretty much 'Come on in and vote,'" Green said. "We're going to talk football now. We're going to stop talking about CBAs and lockouts and now we're going to talk about rules and video and getting ourselves ready to work football games."

They may get ovations similar to the one bestowed on the crew that worked Thursday's Cleveland-Baltimore game with the tentative deal in place.

The referees met for about an hour and a half Friday night to go over the contract, then gathered for another 30 minutes Saturday morning before approving the contract.

"We are obviously pleased to hear it," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said in an email to The Associated Press on Saturday.

Because they were aware of the financial parameters, most of the discussion by the referees involved non-economic issues such as year-round work and developmental squads, said Tim Millis, the association's executive director.

The deal came together quickly this week after an increasing chorus of complaints became impossible to ignore when a disputed touchdown call on the final play gave the Seattle Seahawks a victory over the Green Bay Packers on national television Monday night.

Many thought the ruling of a Seattle touchdown instead of a Green Bay interception was botched, and the labor dispute drew public comments from Obama and his Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

By late Wednesday, the sides had a contract calling for refs' salaries to increase from an average of $149,000 a year in 2011 to $173,000 in 2013, rising to $205,000 by 2019. The current defined benefit pension plan will remain in place for current officials through the 2016 season or until the official earns 20 years' service.

The defined benefit plan will then be frozen. Retirement benefits will be provided for new hires, and for all officials beginning in 2017, through a defined contribution.

Beginning with the 2013 season, the NFL will have the option to hire a number of officials to work year-round. The NFL also can retain additional officials for training and development and assign those officials to work games. The number of additional officials will be determined by the league.

The officials that worked Thursday's Ravens-Browns game were cheered from the moment they walked onto the field. The difference between the regular crew and replacements was clear. The officials kept the game in control, curtailing the chippy play and choppy pace that had marred the first three weeks of the regular season.

"I think the thing we're most proud of is the lesson that we all learned," Green said. "If you're going to be in a professional league, you've got top-notch coaches, you need professional officials as well."

Modular Outdoor Deck Tiles ? Build Your Dream Deck or Patio ...

Having the deck of your dreams can be a reality. Modular decking tiles ? real hardwood tiles that easily interlock together ? are the next hot thing for do-it-yourselfers out to expand their outdoor living space.

Upgrading an existing deck, patio or balcony, is among the top five home improvement projects; it enhances a home?s value and is cheaper than building an actual room addition. Yet traditional deck building has required homeowners to either layout a substantial sum of cash to have professionals do the job, or invest hours of their own time learning the skills needed to do it themselves.

Recently featured on HGTV?s ?Red, Hot & Green?, hosted by expert carpenter Carter Oosterhouse, these modular interlocking decking tiles can make a beautiful do-it-yourself deck possible for even home improvement neophytes.

Each one sqft. modular wooden tile is mounted on a high-impact polypropylene backing. The grid allows the tiles to lock together like children?s plastic building blocks. They are so easy to put together, so you can reasonably expect to invest 60 minutes or less installing a 100 square foot deck.

The 1-3/16 inch-thick tiles are made of beautiful, durable Ipe hardwood, also known as Brazilian Walnut (ironwood). The tiles are manufactured in 12-inch by 12-inch and 12-inch by 24-inch dimensions. The tiles are imported from South America.

Besides easy installation, modular decking tiles have several advantages over traditional decks:

    * No concrete footings or complicated support systems are necessary. Modular decking tiles and pavers can be placed over any reasonably flat surface ? from an existing concrete patio, weathered traditional deck, or balcony, to screened in porches, basements and flat-top roofs.

    * The average cost per square foot of traditional decks range from $18 to over $35 per square foot, depending on the wood or composite material choice. Modular interlocking decking tiles retail between $8.95 and $11.99 per square foot, depending on the style and material.

    * Once assembled, modular decking tiles are as sturdy as a traditional deck. They can easily be disassembled should you decide to relocate your deck, or take it with you when you move.

    * Because they snap together, modular tile decks never have any exposed screws or nails, making them child and pet friendly.

    * Cleanup and maintenance are easy. Simply hose off your modular decking tiles as needed for regular cleaning. Once a year, treat them with a wood sealer containing UV protection.

    * Modular decking tiles can also be used to easily create patios, paths and posh pool areas outdoors, and as flooring in home spas or on apartment or condo balconies. Decking tiles can also be laid in three different designs: traditional, offset or parquet, to create a truly unique look.

2 more Somali journalists murdered; 1 is beheaded

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) ? One Somali journalist was shot dead by gunmen on Friday while a second journalist was beheaded and his body dumped in the street, officials and residents said, two attacks that bring the number of Somali journalists killed this year to 15.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the latest killings, but the deaths fit into a year-long pattern of targeted attacks against Somali journalists. Reporters must watch for attacks from militants and criminals and know that such deaths have been met with judicial inaction in a capital city with crippled government institutions.

Residents in an area just north of Mogadishu discovered the headless dead body of Abdirahman Mohamed Ali, a 26-year-old sports writer with his hands tied behind his back on Thursday. His body also showed signs of torture. No previous killing of a journalist has involved a beheading, and the method of death could be an indication that al-Qaida-linked militants from al-Shabab were responsible.

"His decapitated body was dumped near a restaurant. We were shocked to see his severed head placed on his chest," Ahmed Abdinur, a resident in the restive Suqa Holaha area, said by phone. "We don't know who beheaded him, but our village has seen several such headless bodies before."

Unidentified gunmen shot and killed Ahmed Abdulahi Fanah, a 32-year-old reporter who was working for the Yemeni news agency, the Somali journalists union said Friday. He was shot and killed as he walked out of his home on the way to work, it said.

The killings have made going to work a life-and-death decision for Somali journalists. One female television journalist said she won't risk her life any longer.

"I have decided to leave the country because the time we expected would bring peace and liberty has turned into the worst we have ever seen," Sahra Abdulahi Isse said. "The death threats have increased. ... I will be leaving for Uganda for my own safety."

Most of the 15 deaths appear to have been targeted killings, though last week three journalists were killed when a suicide bomber detonated explosives in a cafe popular with journalists and politicians. The day after that attack gunmen shot and killed another journalist.

Most of the killings have taken place in areas of Mogadishu nominally under the Somali government's control. Despite government promises of prosecutions, no arrests have yet been made for any of the killings in 2012.

"The terrible killings of two more journalists within the space of 36 hours makes clear that tackling the culture of impunity surrounding such atrocities can no longer wait," said Leslie Lefkow, deputy Africa director at Human Rights Watch. "The new president should make investigating the killings a priority, today."

How do we improve access to psychological therapies? | talkhealth ...

Simon Lawton Smith, Head of Policy at the Mental Health Foundation:

?A report from the London School of Economics (LSE) published in June (1) says the NHS in England is failing millions of adults and hundreds of thousands of children with common mental health problems such as anxiety and depression. It claims that only a fraction of people suffering from mental illness have access to treatments, primarily psychological therapies, which would improve their lives and save the taxpayer billions of pounds every year.

The report suggests that NHS trusts are failing to commission evidence-based psychological therapies such as cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) and family therapy, despite their being recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). The costs of psychological therapy are relatively low and recovery rates are high (at around (50%), so investment in psychological therapies will almost certainly pay for itself through higher rates of employment among people with mental health problems, reduced disability benefits and extra tax receipts.

The report focuses largely on the Department of Health?s Improving Access to Psychological Therapy (IAPT) initiative. IAPT was introduced in England in 2007 with a considerable amount of extra funding, and was an important step forward for the provision of psychological therapies. But there are concerns that waiting times for therapies remain long in many parts of the country, and also that there are simply too many people who could benefit from a talking therapy for the current provision to cope. New evidence (2) suggests that the impact of the economic recession over the past four years has been to significantly increase levels of anxiety and depression in the population, adding to pressures on services.

    Plans for the future

The Government has made a commitment to expand IAPT services, especially to children and young people and older people. To give this further momentum, the report urges the new NHS Commissioning Board to take on IAPT as one of its high priority projects. From the training perspective, it argues that IAPT should also be a high priority for Health Education England.

We campaigned for more psychological therapy provision and have welcomed the Government?s commitment and the positive findings from the IAPT work so far. The fact that around two in five people with depression or an anxiety disorder who completed the treatment have recovered from their condition and that others who have not have fully recovered have seen an improvement is a huge achievement.

But this only highlights that there are many people, including children, older people, and people from certain Black and minority ethnic (BME) communities with mental health needs that remain unmet. Implementation is patchy. There is a real danger that it will remain so unless the new NHS commissioning structure in England, led by local GP-led Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs), understand both the high level of need and potential health and economic benefits to continued investment in the programme.

Of course we are not na?ve about the challenges faced. Some areas are struggling because of the lack of qualified staff and very tight resources. It is essential that mental health services staff are adequately trained and selected to meet the patients? complex needs, but this is not going to happen overnight. It?s good news that the Government?s draft mandate for the NHS Commissioning Board includes a commitment to roll out the IAPT programme by 2014/15 so that at least 15% of those with relevant disorders can access services. However this clearly remains a very low proportion of people who could benefit, and we will continue to campaign for psychological therapies to be available to everyone ? not just a few ? who needs them.?

Wall-Ye robot does grunt work at vineyards

    3 hrs.

Winemaking is the latest industry to be hit by robot?fever: French inventors have created a robot that rolls among the grapevines, checking and perhaps pruning as it goes.

A wine grower in France complained three years ago to?Christophe Millot that they were always short on staff. Millot designed the Wall-Ye robot, which is indeed named after Pixar's trash-collecting WALL-E, and the pair have been working together on it ever since.

Wall-Ye moves around on treads and is equipped with a number of cameras for navigation and inspection of vines.?It navigates by GPS, but also recognizes each plant individually and can carry out?special instructions or follow up on previous work.

There are plans to make it able to prune vines and eventually pick grapes, but for now it is limited to less complicated tasks. But checking for bugs, disease, temperature variations and soil problems are important parts of running a vineyard ? and they can be tedious.

Another winemaker, Claire Gazeau-Montrasi, explains in the AFP video above?that she would welcome a robot that took care of the most boring jobs. Like a Roomba or similar household robot, it can do its job slowly but surely, working around its owner's schedule.

At ?25,000, or around $32,000, Wall-Ye isn't cheap, though there are larger and more expensive systems that are capable of more. Automation of agriculture hasn't made it to vineyards quite yet because of the delicate nature of the task, but that may soon change, with?robots like Wall-Ye leading the charge.

    Polaris Office (for iPhone)

Office documents are rarely as accessible as they should be. On a tablet or smartphone, and namely iPad and iPhone, plenty of apps give you some access and interaction with the files you need to stay productive, but it's limited unless you buy Apple's dedicated office apps Pages, Numbers, and Keynote (for word processing documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, respectively).

The productivity app Polaris Office ($12.99) for both iPhone and iPad radically changes the office landscape. It's an alternative to Apple's iWork suite for editing documents, creating new ones, and saving them either to the Polaris Office app or into popular cloud-based storage services, such as Dropbox and Google Drive (formerly Google Docs).

Polaris Office's price is even more competitive than it may first sound. Buying the $12.99 app lets you install both the iPad and iPhone versions, and they include three productivity categories (word processing, spreadsheets, presentations) in one tight bundle. A similar app called Quickoffice Pro HD (recently? acquired by Google) costs $19.99 and only installs on iPads. Apple sells its Pages, Numbers, and Keynote separately for $9.99 a pop.

For its solid functionality at a great price, Polaris Office is an Editors' Choice among productivity apps for the iPad.

    Supported File Types and Services
Polaris Office supports.doc and .docx word documents, .xls and .xlsx spreadsheets, .ppt and .pptx presentations, .txt documents and PDFs.

You can connect your Polaris Office app to a solid, but not comprehensive, selection of popular cloud-based services: Google Docs, Dropbox, Box, and WebDAV services. The comparable app Quickoffice has a few additional services, such as SugarSync, Evernote, and Catch?I'd love to see Polaris Office adopt a few more services to its list, too. In any event, integrating with a cloud-based storage solution lets you bypass iCloud in some sense, as you can use the other service to sync the files you create on your iOS devices. You can start a document on your iPhone, save it to Dropbox, and edit it tomorrow using Polaris Office on your iPad. Or you could open it on a Windows or Mac computer in another program of your choice.

    Interface and Usability
An intuitive interface helps boost how productive you can be with Polaris Office. There's little to learn that isn't explicit from the button names, simple instructions, and interface design. Sample documents, one of each of the three main varieties, come preloaded in the app. Their contents contain instructions for using the app and its features, so be sure to read and explore them.

A few unconventional controls, however, take some getting used to. For example, the convention for selecting text on an iPhone or iPad is to press and hold the screen until the text is highlighted and spanner bar controls appear, which you can drag to adjust how much text you need to select. Polaris Office has you double tap to select text instead, which any seasoned iOS user would simply never try off the cuff. It's an instruction you have to read to know.

Another example of unconventional controls: When scrolling on most iOS apps, you can swipe up and kind of flick the page to make it continue scrolling even after you release your finger (until it slows down and stops or you touch the screen again to regain control). Polaris Office uses this motion when you look through lists of files to open, but the motion is a little different once you open a document. Inside a document, you can scroll with a flick, but only if you touch the margins, which is difficult to do on an iPhone unless you zoom way out. Even then, the motion is "stickier" and the pages flow at a pace that's different from what you see in other apps. This difference isn't a show stopper, but it was noticeable.

    Getting to Work
You can edit your office files in Polaris Office, with some basic limitations?but even these constraints are on par with what you might find in Google Docs or even Microsoft's free Web app versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint (they're wrapped into the online and cloud service call SkyDrive. For example, you can't track changes or enable macros, but that's not possible in Google Docs or SkyDrive either.

The tools easily cover the basics and then some. You can format text, insert images, save files as different file types (export to PDF, for example), change the page layout, alter the type of cell in spreadsheets, look up formulas, sort, play a presentation, and much more.

When testing the app on a speedy iPhone 5 with a Wi-Fi connection, documents loaded extremely quickly. You can open any file in a near-full screen mode, collapsing the top toolbar. In landscape mode, the toolbar disappears permanently.

Another minor damper on the productivity party was that when I searched for a document that was in my connected Google Drive account, Polaris Office couldn't find it. I later realized that you have to search each of your connected storage spaces separately, so the first search bar I encountered was only for documents created and saved in Polaris Office. When you first open a connected storage are, such as Google Docs, you won't see a search bar at first glance. But it appears when you pull down the page?it's just kind of hidden and tucked away at the top.

    Polaris Office for Productivity
Polaris Office couldn't be a better deal. For just a few dollars more than what it would cost you to buy one of Apple's office apps, you can get three, all rolled into one tight productivity machine. Plus, Polaris Office works on both iPhone and iPad, which is like getting another two-for-one deal, with no subscriptions or add-on fees. I should hope future updates will smooth out the few unconventional controls, and maybe add a couple of more services to the storage options, but nevertheless, it's a great app that easily is a PCMag Editors' Choice.

(AP) ? Americans' confidence in the economy jumped this month to the highest level since February, bolstered by a brighter outlook for overall business conditions and hiring.

The Conference Board said Tuesday that its Consumer Confidence Index rose to 70.3. That's up from 61.3 in August, which was revised higher. And it's the highest reading since February, when employers added 259,000 jobs and many thought the recovery was strengthening.

The survey is watched closely because consumer spending drives nearly 70 percent of economic activity. The reading is still below 90, a level that indicates a healthy economy. The index hasn't been that high since December 2007.

Consumer confidence has fluctuated sharply this year. It has fallen five times in the past nine months, hitting a low for the year in August.

The latest increase could be a positive sign for President Barack Obama, who is facing re-election at a time when the economy is the top issue on most voters' minds.

The survey showed consumers were more optimistic about the current availability of jobs and their outlook over the next six months. Their confidence in the job market is higher, even though employers added just 96,000 jobs in August ? too few to keep up with population growth.

And consumers' expectations for future growth over the next six months surged.

"This has recouped the ground we lost. Consumers see the economy moving ahead," said Lynn Franco, director of economic indicators at The Conference Board. But she cautioned that the index is volatile.

Some economists also question whether the higher level of confidence is sustainable. They've seen the index spike briefly since the Great Recession ended. Some say confidence could be affected by negative campaign ads that focus on the economy.

Mark Vitner, a senior economist at Wells Fargo, said former President Bill Clinton may have helped boost confidence in September with his Sept. 5 speech at the Democratic National Convention.

Clinton "rekindled memories of better economic times" and assured voters that the U.S. economy was on the right track, Vitner said.

The Conference Board consumer confidence survey was conducted from Sept. 1 through Sept. 13.

The survey also followed the Republican National Convention, at which Mitt Romney, the Republican presidential nominee, promised he would create 12 million jobs if elected.

Vitner says there were other factors that helped boost confidence. Stock prices are higher and the housing market has been recovering, he noted.

The latest evidence of that was found in the Standard & Poor's/Case Shiller index released Tuesday, which showed home prices kept rising in July across the United States. Prices were buoyed by greater sales and fewer foreclosures.

National home prices increased 1.2 percent in July, compared to the same month last year, according to the index. That's the second straight year-over-year gain after two years without one.

Steady price increases and record-low mortgage rates are helping drive a housing recovery

The consumer confidence survey polled 500 people. For the first time since February, both the index that measures how consumers feel now about the economy and their outlook for the next six month rose. Consumers were considerably more optimistic about the short-term outlook for business conditions, employment and their financial situation.

Those expecting business conditions to improve over the next six months increased to 18.2 percent from 16.7 percent. Those anticipating business conditions to worsen decreased to 13.8 percent from 17.6 percent.

Consumers expecting more jobs in the months ahead increased to 18.5 percent from 15.8 percent. Those anticipating fewer jobs declined to 18.5 percent from 23.7 percent.

The proportion of consumers expecting an increase in their incomes edged up to 16.3 percent from 16.0 percent.

Adobe Edge swells to include Tools & Services, streamlines the designer web

Adobe really wants web designers to kick things up a notch. Not satisfied with where Edge has gone so far, it just released a full-fledged Edge Tools & Services suite to cover the bases for polished desktop and mobile pages on most any modern platform. Motion tool Edge Animate (formerly Edge Preview), automated previewing tool Edge Inspect (formerly Shadow) and mobile app packager PhoneGap Build have all arrived in the suite as version 1.0 releases, and come with both Edge Web Fonts as well as TypeKit to spruce up text. A pair of pre-release utilities, Edge Code (Brackets) and Edge Reflow, are also joining the group to tackle the nitty-gritty of editing web code and layouts. Any of the apps will readily cooperate with third-party software, although they won't always be cheap: while most of the Edge suite is free to use in at least a basic form as long as you have a Creative Cloud membership at any level, Edge Animate is only free during its initial run and should eventually cost either $15 per month or $499 in a one-time sale. For pros that want to burnish their corner of the web to a shine, the result just might be worth the expense.

UK: Petition to end discriminatory Sharia court system

We, the undersigned, support the Arbitration and Mediation (Equality) Bill introduced to the House of Lords in 2011, which aims to tackle discriminatory practices, particularly against women and children, in arbitration and mediation carried out in the UK via Sharia courts. We call on the Government to take immediate action, support the passing of the Bill and defend equality for all before the law.

    Why this is important

The Arbitration and Mediation Services (Equality) Bill introduced into the House of Lords by Baroness Caroline Cox in 2011 aims to tackle the discrimination faced by Muslim women within the Sharia court system.

The Bill, which applies to all arbitration tribunals, will firmly outlaw the practice of giving women?s testimony half the weight of men?s.

    The Bill?s proposals include:

    • a new criminal offence of? ?falsely claiming legal jurisdiction?? for any person who adjudicates upon matters which ought to be decided by criminal or family courts.
    • Explicitly stating in legislation that sex discrimination law applies directly to arbitration tribunal proceedings. Discriminatory rulings may be struck down under the Bill.
    • Requiring public bodies to inform women that they have fewer legal rights if their marriage is unrecognised by English law.
    • Explicitly stating on the face of legislation that arbitration tribunals may not deal with matters of family law (such as legally recognised divorce or custody of children) or criminal law (such as domestic violence).
    • Making it easier for a civil court to set aside a consent order if a mediation settlement agreement or other agreement was reached under duress.
    • Explicitly stating on the face of legislation that a victim of domestic abuse is a witness to an offence and therefore should be expressly protected from witness intimidation.

It's election season again and 2012 is likely to be remembered for many things, one of which is the amount of money spent on political advertising. iPhone 5 vs iPhone 4S vs iPad 3 vs Android: Benchmark review

iPhone 5 vs iPhone 4S vs iPad 3 vs the other guys: Benchmarks

For some, simply knowing the new [iPhone 5] is twice as fast as the last iPhone is enough. But some of us want numbers. We want to know how much faster. Sure, Apple typically brings experience to a spec fight, but it's the specs that drive the experience. It's the engine in the meticulously appointed car. It's the stats behind the championship team. It's the science behind the art.

So with that in mind we ran the iPhone 5 through a whole battery of benchmarks, and to give it some context we put it up head to head, device to device against the iPhone 4S, iPad 3, and added in scores for the Samsung Galaxy S3 and a sampling of other competing phones.

    Here's the results:

    Environment

Pulling a device out of the box and running benchmarks is fine but it doesn't necessarily give real world results. Odds are the first thing you'll do is load up your iPhone 5 with the usual suspects - apps, games, contacts, calendars, reminders, music, video, etc..

So for this test I restored an iCloud backup to my iPhone 5 that's already on my iPad 3 and iPhone 4S so they're both loaded with tons of the same data. It seems a little more practical than comparing it straight out of the box. All devices were also running the iOS 6 public release candidate.

As a preface, the only thing I did before performing any of these benchmarks was close out all apps from the multitasking tray. At the time either the benchmarking app was the only thing running or Safari in order to obtain the benchmarks.

    Geekbench

When it comes to Geekbench, we used the iOS app Geekbench 2 in order to benchmark. Higher numbers are better in this instance. Geekbench looks at all kinds of information across the entire system resulting in an entire system benchmark. Included data is integer, floating point, memory, and stream performance. Geekbench takes all these scores and gives you an average for the entire system.

    iPhone 5

    iphone 5 geekbench results

The iPhone 5 scored between 1500 and 1650 each time we ran the rest. The average of 5 consecutive tests was 1615. We performed the test after killing every app and hard rebooting the device.

    iPhone 4S

    iphone 4s geekbench results

Just like the iPhone 5, before performing benchmarks I made sure to kill everything from the multitasker and do a hard reboot. After 5 consecutive tests, the average was around 635. Much lower than the iPhone 5 when it comes to system benchmarks.

    iPad 3

    ipad 3 geekbench results

The iPad 3 outperforms the iPhone 4S but doesn't come close to the iPhone 5 in terms of Geekbench results. Our average result on Geekbench was around 750 after 5 consecutive tests. All apps were closed except for the Geekbench 2 iOS app and a hard reboot was performed.

The A5X processor obviously performs significantly better than the iPhone 4S' standard A5 but when it comes to the A6, the iPhone 5 wins each and every time.

    Other devices

If you're wondering how it stacks up against other devices that have been benchmarked using Geekbench, here are some reference numbers from some popular non-Apple devices on the market.

    • Samsung Galaxy S III - 1543
    • Motorola Droid Razr M - 1480
    • HTC One X - 1821

    Sunspider

While Geekbench looks at your system as a whole, Sunspider will exclusively measure Javascript performance on your device via a test done through your web browser.

In the case of Sunspider, a lower number is better since it's measuring your device's response time in milliseconds for each test. After running each test 5 times, Sunspider will give you an average number of time (in milliseconds) that it took your device to complete the test.

    iPhone 5

    iphone 5 sunspider results

I ran Sunspider on my iPhone 5 three times and each time I ended up around the 915 to 920 ms mark. While running the test I had no other app open on the device other than the native Safari browser.

    iPhone 4S

    iphone 4s sunspider results

Just like the iPhone 5, we ran the rest three times on the iPhone 4S will nothing open but Safari and after another hard reboot. All three tests resulted in a time of around 1800 ms.

When it comes to rendering Javascript, it's quite obvious the iPhone 5 can handle it and process it almost twice as fast as the iPhone 4S can.

    iPad 3

    ipad 3 sunspider results

Same routine as before, after a reboot and Safari being the only app open, the iPad 3 faired better than the iPhone 4S with an average score of around 1450 ms. It isn't a huge difference when it comes to rendering Javascript and probably not one that many users would even notice.

When compared to the iPhone 5, the A5X chipset can't hold its own against the A6 any longer. It's obvious the iPhone 5 is an all around faster device when it comes to system and rendering benchmarks.

    Other devices

Here's some average benchmarks for other popular devices on the market and how they score with Sunspider on average. Remember, the lower the number the better.

    • Samsung Galaxy S 3 - 1442
    • HTC One X - 1735
    • Nokia Lumia 900 - 6800

    HTML5Test.com

HTML5Test.com does nothing more than measure how well your browser supports and handles HTML5 content. While it isn't as in-depth as tests like Sunspider and Geekbench, it's still worth taking a look at.

    iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, & iPad 3

    HTML5Test for iOS

Considering the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, and iPad 3 all run the same version of iOS and support the same native Safari browser within it, all three devices scored a total of 360 points plus 9 bonus points. HTML5Test.com uses a 500 point scale.

    Other devices

    HTML5 Test on other devices

Here's how a couple other devices stacked up when it came to HTML5 compatibility and support.

    • Blackberry 10 - 447 plus 10 bonus points
    • Windows Phone 8 - 300 plus 6 bonus points
    • Android 4.0 - 280 plus 3 bonus points

Dave Cooper Is Unemployed: The World's Gone Mad!

I mean, this isn't fucking Los Angeles, so why the hell do people want everything to be so different? Why do things have to be written in neon, covered in cheap plastic, and written in ten different languages, so foreigners ? God bless them ? can understand what I sell, and what they can eat? The world's gone fucking mad, but if you want to survive, so you've got enough money to retire on, you've got to follow the crowd.

I'm too old for this new stuff, which is why I think the old days were the best. You know, people would come into the pub, buy a drink, smoke a cigarette, and have a chat. Perhaps they would then buy another drink, have another cigarette, and then be on their way. I sold beer or spirits, and wine by the glass was unheard of, because people in south-east London didn't drink wine back then. Food was a packet of peanuts or nothing at all, and certainly not salmon, new potatoes and a green salad. But it's all changed, and because I'm old and too slow to keep up with things, I really wish that I was no longer here.

Australia deputy PM criticizes 'crazies' in GOP

Wayne Swan, who also serves as treasurer and is his center-left Labor Party government's ranking finance minister, says the "cranks and crazies that have taken over the Republican Party" are the greatest threat to the U.S. economy. Watch an excerpt of his speech.

    By NBC News wire services

CANBERRA, Australia -- Australia's deputy prime minister said Friday that the greatest threat to the U.S. economy are "cranks and crazies" in the Republican Party.

Wayne Swan, who also serves as treasurer and is his center-left Labor Party government's ranking finance minister, took aim at the Tea Party during a speech to a business forum on Friday, breaking a convention among Australia's major parties to steer clear of U.S. domestic political debates.

Swan, one of few world leaders able to boast his country had avoided recession during the global financial crisis, also labelled the Tea Party wing of the Republicans as "extreme."

"Let's be blunt and acknowledge the biggest threat to the world's biggest economy are the cranks and crazies that have taken over the Republican Party," Swan said in a speech in Sydney.

While courting Hispanic voters on Univision, GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney delivered a new message after saying he stood by his beliefs about the "47 percent." NBC's Chuck Todd reports.

The Republican Party's position on the U.S. budget had led a year ago to the deadlock in negotiations, Swan said, to prevent the looming "fiscal cliff" -- nearly $600 billion in planned spending cuts and tax hikes that will bite early next year.

Polls: Obama ahead in 3 key states

The U.S. Congress had been debating whether to increase the U.S. borrowing ceiling but the Republicans would not budge.

"Despite President Obama's goodwill and strong efforts, the national interest was held hostage by the rise of the extreme Tea Party wing of the Republican Party," he said.?

Australian politicians rarely launch such blunt criticism of their counterparts in the United States, Australia's most important strategic ally.

Texas' U.S. Senate candidate Ted Cruz and a Meet the Press roundtable talk about the Tea Party's rise in the GOP and Paul Ryan's role in that public increase.

Swan, named by banking magazine Euromoney as its finance minister of the year in 2011, also called on the U.S. Congress to resolve an agreement on the budget to support growth in the short term.

NYT: Daunting path greets Romney before debates

With the U.S. presidential campaign entering its final weeks, the spending cuts and tax hikes will kick in unless Obama and Congress reach a deficit-reduction deal.

    'Peddling hatred'
Democrats want to make up the shortfall by increasing taxes on wealthy Americans, while Republicans favor spending cuts.

The conservative opposition said Swan's speech betrayed his "hatred" of Republicans.

"The Labor Party is peddling hatred and [they've] got to stop," opposition treasury spokesman Joe Hockey told reporters. "They hate the Republican Party. I'd like Wayne Swan to say something positive about someone somewhere."

    More international coverage from NBCNews.com

Prime Minister Julia Gillard, who is due to travel to New York next week to address the United Nations General Assembly, defended her deputy's comments as "appropriate."

"What happens in the U.S. economy matters to the world economy and it matters to us," she told reporters. "Wayne Swan was making that very common sense point today."

Adam Lockyer, a lecturer at Sydney University's U.S. Studies Center, described Swan's speech as "a clumsy political move" that left him open to attack from his political enemies.

Lockyer said Swan might have been attempting to link the Tea Party to the obstructionism of the Australian opposition, which has thwarted Labor's legislative agenda in a finely-balanced Parliament.

Full US election coverage from NBC Politics

Australia has long maintained that its close relationship with Washington, and its 61-year-old defense alliance, remains strong regardless of who is in the White House.

Former conservative Prime Minister John Howard was widely criticized in 2007 when he claimed Obama, then a Democratic presidential nominee, represented al-Qaida's interests.

Howard, a staunch U.S. ally in the Iraq war who lost elections later that year after 11 years in power, created one of the first controversies of Obama's presidential campaign by attacking his plan to withdraw troops.
