Leaky, a tool for comparing car insurance costs, adds Esurance ...

If an alien civilization learned about us only through our television ads, they would assume we are a people who spend most of our time thinking about car insurance. Geico, Progressive, Allstate ? it?s hard to take a single spin around the dial without finding a message from one of them. At the same time, comparing prices between auto companies is a hassle. Getting on the phone with any of them is likely to result in a hard sell, and the process can be depressingly time-consuming.

Leaky, a SoMa startup backed by Y Combinator, is working to take the pain out of the process. When they launched last year, their service worked a little too well ? insurance companies complained about Leaky scraping price information from their websites, forcing it to shut down. The company spent several months figuring out a new way to compare prices, and settled on regulatory filings, in which insurance companies are required to make public certain price information.

Leaky's car insurance comparison tool. Credit: Crunchbase.com

The result is sophisticated guesswork about how much a given insurance plan will cost you, but Leaky says it?s accurate: typically within 2 or 3 percent of the actual cost, according to founder Jason Traff. To date, Leaky has offered price quotes from Allstate, Geico, Progressive, State Farm and 21st Century. They?ve promised to add more insurance companies over time, and today they?re delivering: Esurance, which currently covers about 850,000 people, is now searchable on Leaky.

Leaky, which is free to use, asks visitors only for an e-mail address and a ZIP code. From there it will guide you through a series of questions about your vehicle, and you can watch your estimated cost for an insurance policy rise and fall depending on how you answer. Thinking about buying a new vehicle? You can use Leaky to see how much the insurance policy will cost you before you even visit the dealership.

Americans spend an average of $2,000 a year on insurance premiums, Traff said, but many of them haven?t taken the time whether they?re paying more than they have to. I ran some sample Leaky searches and found that some insurance companies charge hundreds of dollars more than their competitors. If you?re curious about your own policy, Leaky deserves a look.

How To Control The Position Of The On-Screen Cursor On iPhone The Easy Way Using Swipe Gestures

Advertisements

It seems that iOS-based text editing tweaks for jailbroken devices can be compared to London buses, they keep you waiting for significant periods of time and all of a sudden two of them would show up at the same time. That is the exact same thing which has recently happened in Cydia with the release of the SwipeShiftCaret tweak as well as the SwipeSelection offering.

Both packages are available to download free of charge from Cydia and both seem to have been built with exactly the same end goal in mind ? to make text editing on an iOS device more user friendly and accessible. SwipeShiftCaret comes from developer r_plus and makes itself nice and comfortable in any area of iOS that allows text to be entered and edited by the user.

In a stock installation of Apple?s mobile operating system, selecting, highlighting and editing text has proved to be somewhat cumbersome and difficult to use at times. Especially for those who may suffer from having slightly chubby fingers. This particular problem with the OS has been highlighted recently thanks to a concept video that has been doing the rounds, and SwipeShiftCaret seems to implement the recommended suggestions extremely well.

Once installed, SwipeShiftCaret doesn?t append the home screen with any additional app icons but does give itself its own little nest within the native Settings bundle. The tweak settings allow one aspect of the installation to be configured, which relates to the continual moving aspect of the character spacing caret. The package itself brings three individual features to iOS text editing, which are; being able to move the spacing caret with a simple drag gesture of the finger or move the caret in a continual motion by dragging slowly along the text string.

The final offering, and perhaps the most useful one, is being able to depress the shift key on the virtual keyboard and drag along the string of text to be able to highlight it. This simple drag gesture is something which replaces the previous method of pressing-and-holding and then having to manipulate those little blue pins that appear on the selected text.

SwipeShiftCaret is available as a free of charge download from the BigBoss repository and requires a jailbroken device running iOS 5.0 or above.

Brad Garlinghouse Becomes CEO Of Booming File Sharing Site YouSendIt

114811v1-max-250x250Box has been grabbing headlines lately because it has been nailing a big market: enterprise customers who need to easily share and store big collections of documents online. But a quiet Silicon Valley rival has also been winning a bunch of this turf -- YouSendIt. Today, the company is backing up its position with some new stats, and a new chief executive, Brad Garlinghouse. He's coming off a two-year stint as the head of consumer products at AOL, and a previous five years heading up consumer and enterprise apps at Yahoo. He also has roots as an investor and entrepreneur, so this move is going back to that.

Should I go to couples therapy?

Considering couples therapy? Many couples all across the world find themselves considering couples therapy when their relationships go awry. ?When you made the decision to marry your partner, you most likely gave a vow promising to love that person forever despite the obstacles you might face. Sound familiar? Choosing to go to couples therapy is a way to reaffirm that commitment and try to fix your relationship before giving up.

When looking for a couple?s therapist, make sure that he or she is accredited by the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT). These therapists have special training in marriage and family therapy (hence the name) and are more likely to be competent marriage therapists. A common problem with couples therapy is that many therapists do not have much training in the subject and are not equipped with the tools to handle marital counseling.

Oftentimes, marriage counseling is short term and usually both partners must be present. There are many reasons why you may be seeking this kind of therapy. It can help to enhance the bold between you and your spouse as well as better appreciate one another. If you are having problems, it can be one way to address those issues ranging from communication, sexual relations, anger, affairs, and financial troubles. Together it can be difficult to look at things objectively, but an outside opinion can illuminate these problems for both of you. It can help you make better decisions and find the roots of your marital difficulties.

One of the best things about making the decision to go to couples therapy is that you can also make the decision to leave. If your counselor isn?t a good fit, it?s perfectly acceptable to find another. Although therapy can be difficult and you will be forced to question many of your actions, behavior and cognitive thoughts, it?s a great way to learn more about yourself and strengthen your relationship with your partner.

Android 'fragmentation' visualized in 2 pictures

30 min.

You may have heard about the problem of Android fragmentation. In a nutshell, the trouble is that there are so many different devices out there, running so many different versions of Google's mobile OS, with so many different processors and button layouts and all the rest, that it's hard to design software for them or reliably make your app or website look right. There are arguments on both sides, but it helps to be able to visualize just how real the fragmentation is.

OpenSignalMaps is a service?that maintains maps of mobile carriers' signal strengths, tracked and contributed to by an app you can download. They also?keeps records of the brands and models of phones that download the app, and they've just released some interesting figures that show off the huge variety of Android devices out there.

There are a number of visualizations, but this particular pair is perhaps?the best representation of what many perceive as a serious?problem. Here is a comparison of all the screen resolutions they detected in their data delvings:

And here, for comparison, are all the sizes you have to worry about when considering Apple devices:

Of course, what the Android system loses to complexity, it gains in diversity. There is a device for practically every combination of size, price?and power. It's a nightmare for developers in some ways, but also a wonderland for demanding consumers, and a key to its high levels of penetration worldwide.

Check out the rest of the report here, with a few more interesting facts and visualizations of the number and variety of Android devices.

Hollie Cavanagh on American Idol Elimination: No Complaints!

Hollie Cavanagh "just kind of knew." That's what she told reporters not long after hearing her name announced as the latest American Idol elimination. That was the feeling she had when she woke up.

So, once the premonition became a reality, how did Hollie feel?

Hollie Cavanagh Sings Goodbye

Honestly, if you'd asked me a couple of weeks ago I would've been upset and in tears, but you can't really complain when you are at the top four," she said. "There were so many people previously in the competition that would have died to have been in this spot, so I am proud of myself at this point."

That's certainly the right attitude to take, but try telling it to Joshua Ledet! He was more of a mess than Cavanagh after the results were unveiled.

"I don't know why the boy was crying, I'll get to see him in like two days!" Hollie laughed.

Cavanagh added that she truly has "no idea" who among the final three will win, but she does have nothing but nice things to say about the judges.

"They said how proud they were of me and how far I had come. Now I'm just looking to the future and see what the future brings. I don't want to look down as I have no regrets - I saw myself grow through the whole process and I'm proud of myself. I don't take anything back."

Six-Year-Old Records Unassisted Triple Play in Little League Game

Only 15 players in Major League Baseball history have ever turned an unassisted triple play. In 120 YEARS. Now a six-year-old has joined the club!

Due in large part to terrible base-running by his opponents, but still.

In a youth baseball game in Georgia, a soft line drive floated directly to shortstop Ross Bernath, who nabbed it cleanly, raced back to touch third base, then chased down the somehow-still-advancing runner from second. Score it 5, unassisted!

The only sad part? Ross' career may have just peaked.

Hollie Cavanagh Runs Out Of Time On 'American Idol'

Phillip Phillips joins her in the bottom two for the first time, while David Cook and Jennifer Lopez hit the stage.
By Adam Graham

Hollie Cavanagh on "American Idol"

Phillip Phillips was given his first taste of the bottom two, but it was Hollie Cavanagh who was eliminated from "American Idol" on Thursday (May 10).

Cavanagh, the 18-year-old from McKinney, Texas, received the lowest number of votes from the nearly 70 million votes cast, according to host Ryan Seacrest. Cavanagh received harsh marks for her performance of Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me" on Wednesday's performance episode; Randy Jackson called it "the wrong choice at the wrong time."

Cavanagh just missed a trip back to Texas as part of the top three "Hometown Heroes" visits, which happen on next week's show.

The Liverpudlian kept it together while singing Miley Cyrus' "The Climb" at the close of the show, though her close friend Joshua Ledet was shown tearing up nearby onstage.

Mentor Jimmy Iovine had all but written off Cavanagh after "I Can't Make You Love Me." "I assumed she understood the core of the song. Evidently, she did not," Iovine said in his weekly roundup of the week's performances. "She did not have the personal experience or the professional experience to take on this song. When the chorus came in, she hit the opera button. And at that moment, I felt she crashed and burned and lost out to those other three singers."

He had high praise for the others. He said Phillip Phillips "finally delivered on the promise that we've been looking for all year" with his version of Damien Rice's "Volcano"; Jessica Sanchez "murdered" her performance of the "Dreamgirls" hit "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going, "referring to it as "shock and awe"; and Ledet "created a piece of magic that is very rarely seen on the "American Idol" stage" with his take on James Brown's "It's a Man's Man's Man's World." "I've seen Prince, I've seen Bruce Springsteen do that, but I've never seen that on 'American Idol,' " Iovine said. "It was so, so captivating. I want to see it again and again and again."

Iovine added that he thinks the competition is up for grabs. "Last year, I knew Scotty was gonna win the whole thing. This year, I haven't got a clue who's going to get into the final," he said. "Any one of them, with the right song and the right note, can steal the show. It's up to them and, eventually, America's vote."

When the results were read, Sanchez was the first one told she made the top three, followed by Ledet.

Also on the show, seventh-season "Idol" winner David Cook dropped by to perform "The Last Song I'll Write for You," and Jennifer Lopez turned in a performance of her song "Dance Again."

Jet disappears from radar near Indonesian mountain

The missing Sukhoi Superjet-100 takes off for a demonstration flight from Jakarta's Halim Perdanakusuma airport on Wednesday. The aircraft was on the fourth stop of a six-nation "Welcome Asia!" roadshow after having already been to Myanmar, Pakistan and Kazakhstan.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

Updated at 9:56 a.m. ET: A Russian-made airliner carrying 46 people lost contact with air traffic controllers during a demonstration flight in Indonesia Wednesday, officials said.

The Indonesian military said the Sukhoi Superjet-100?"fell" from the sky, Reuters reported.?Several diplomats from the Russian Embassy, potential buyers from several Indonesian airlines and journalists were?among the 38 passengers on board, according to Rear Marshal Daryatmo, a search and rescue official who only uses one name. There were also eight Russian crew members, he added. ??

The flight took off from Jakarta's Halim Perdanakusuma Airport at about 2 p.m. local time (3 a.m. ET) and disappeared from radar near the 7,200-foot Mount Salak in West Java, national search agency spokesman Gagah Prakoso told The Associated Press. It had been scheduled to return 50 minutes later.

Citing an official, Reuters reported that radio contact was lost with the plane after it descended from 10,000 feet to 6,000 feet.

"I saw a big plane passing just over my house," said Juanda, a villager who lives near Mount Salak told local station TVOne. "It was veering a bit to one side, the engine roaring. It seemed to be heading toward Salak, but I didn't hear an explosion or anything."

Olga Kayukova, a spokeswoman for Russia's United Aircraft Corporation, told Reuters the Sukhoi Superjet-100 was making a second flight as part of the demonstration program.?

"The first flight was carried out in a normal mode ... The pre-flight preparations were carried out in full and the plane was completely ready to fly," she said.?

"According to information from Indonesia, the contact with the plane was broken after 20 minutes from the take-off ... ?search works are under way."?

An Indonesian charter airline Sky Aviation posted on its Facebook account what it said was a picture of a Sukhoi Superjet-100 at the airport.

Relatives of people who were believed to be on the missing Sukhoi Superjet-100 aircraft check the passenger list at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Wednesday.

Search and rescue teams were heading to the area, said Bambang Ervan, a spokesman for the Ministry of Transportation.?Bad weather, however, forced at least two helicopters to turn back. ??

'No trace'
"A helicopter has just returned but says there is no trace of it. Rescuers are looking at the maps trying to determine where it could be," Sergey Dolya, who flew on the missing aircraft's first flight, told Russia Today.

Russia Today said a hijacking had not been ruled out by local officials, but noted the plane would have run out of fuel by now.

With a capacity of 68-103 passengers, the Sukhoi's Superjet-100 was developed in partnership with Boeing and Italy's Finmeccanica.?The plane is the first completely new airliner designed by Russia since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

The missing plane was on the fourth stop of a six-nation "Welcome Asia!" roadshow after having already been to Myanmar, Pakistan and Kazakhstan.

It was supposed to head next to Laos and Vietnam. Russia has hoped that the short- to mid-range jet, which made its maiden run in 2008, will help it break into international markets dominated by Boeing and Airbus.

Sukhoi, which has orders for 170 planes, plans to produce up to 1,000 Superjets, primarily for foreign markets.

Estate Planning for New Parents

My wife and I are expecting our third child any day now, so when I saw Erik Canter?s post over at Forbes.com on financial and estate planning for new parents it caught my attention. ?It is generally a good article, with solid advice. ?He suggests that new parents update their estate plans, which includes their Wills and/or their Revocable Trust documents, powers of attorney and living wills, and any beneficiary designations for retirement accounts and life insurance. ?He also suggests that parents re-evaluate life insurance coverage, review the family budget, and begin planning for college expenses. ?These are all important steps for new parents.

However, there is one critical error in Erik?s advice. ?He appears to suggest that parents should name their child (or children) as a beneficiary of life insurance and retirement benefits directly, which is almost always a terrible idea. ?This is because minors are not allowed to manage their own property, and if on the parent?s death a minor child is designated to receive insurance proceeds or retirement benefits directly, a Court will have to appoint a Guardian of the Estate to hold the property for the child until adulthood. ?

Having a Guardian of the Estate appointed requires formal legal proceedings which will produce additional legal fees (usually well in excess of the cost of planning to prevent the situation). ?Also, the time it takes to obtain an appointment of a Guardian of the Estate may cause delay in the distribution of funds which are often needed for the child?s immediate care. ?In addition, in Pennsylvania, a surviving parent may not be appointed as sole Guardian of the Estate (i.e. a co-guardian is required).

Just as troubling, when a child turns eighteen the Guardian is legally required to distribute all of the property to the child directly. ?I think that generally speaking, teenagers do not have the life or financial skills required to manage significant wealth. ?Also, if life insurance was intended to provide for the child?s higher education, distributing the proceeds (perhaps hundreds of thousands of dollars or more) at age eighteen may have the exact opposite effect.

It is far more advisable to name a trust for the child as the beneficiary. ?The trust can be established in the parent?s Will, as part of a Revocable Trust, or even as a stand-alone document. ?Using a trust reduces the chance that a Guardian of the Estate will need to be appointed and allows parents to ensure a trusted adult will have control of a child?s inheritance until the child is old enough and mature enough to handle the responsibility. ?

It is very important for parents to update their estate plans when they have a child, and beneficiary designations are critical components of a comprehensive estate plan. ?That is why parents should make sure their designations name trusts for their minor children as the beneficiaries, and never as the beneficiaries directly.

Live from CTIA with Jim Cramer and the CEOs of the four largest US carriers!

Image

In one corner, we have CNBC's Jim Cramer. And in the other corner stands the heads of the four largest mobile operators in the United States: Ralph de la Vega (AT&T Mobility), Dan Mead (Verizon Wireless), Dan Hesse (Sprint) and Philipp Humm (T-Mobile). We fully expect Jim to lob a few hardball questions at these gentlemen, and there's no doubt zingers will be flung around. Who knows -- maybe we'll even get some news out of this keynote, so join us as we liveblog the Tuesday afternoon CTIA keynote, won't you?

Plum Mobile lineup at CTIA 2012 hands-on

Image

Little-known Plum Mobile appeared at CTIA with the four dual SIM Android sets pictured above and the Might, a Galaxy Note twin we had a peek at a little earlier today. From the top left we have the Debut, which is a 7-in WVGA tablet -- that can be used as a phone -- with Android 2.2 powered by an 800MHz CPU, a 5-megapixel camera and a 4250mAh battery. Pricing for the Plum Debut is somewhere in the neighborhood of $180. The $90 Plum Capacity runs Android 2.2 with a 650MHz CPU, it also offers a 3.2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, WiFi, a 3.5-inch HVGA display, and comes in "several" color options. The Wicked 3G is a quadband GSM dualband 3G set with a 3 megapixel camera around back, personal hotspot, and a 2.8-inch resistive display. Rounding out the set is the Android 2.3 Plum Orbit, this $50 dollar set lacks 3G but does have a quadband GSM radio, a 2 megapixel camera and a 3.2-inch display.

All of Plum Mobile's sets are fairly low cost but the materials and build quality were decent. The Wicked 3G -- aside from having the best name of the group -- was somehow our favorite of the bunch. Sure it is pretty shiny plastic but the shape was just great to hang onto which is something of a rarity in our world of giant slabs. We doubt that we'll be seeing these phones in any brick and mortar stores on these shores, so we thought we'd treat you to some glossies of them all. Check the gallery just below.
